Microliths and Momentary Drifts is the first full-length collaboration from the trio of zakè (Zach Frizzell), Ossa (Kaiton Slusher), and ASC (James Clements), where rolling analog synth lines, chest-rattling bass, and otherworldly atmospherics evoke and build on the timeless qualities of peak-era 90s ambient. Each artist has released solo and collaborative works for Zakè Drone Recordings and Past Inside The Present over the last half-decade, but in this combination, Slusher’s stratospheric fugues take center stage, guided by Frizzell’s compositional hand and the soft power of Clements’ low-end rumble.
“Every collaboration takes me outside myself in a different way,” Slusher notes, “and this one tells a complete story that developed naturally as we bounced ideas between one another; I really feel as though we shared a genuine connection in what we were aiming to achieve.” Frizzell elaborates, “Only the three of us, working in this balance and contributing our own authentic pieces of the puzzle, could have brought this record into being.” Throughout the set, we hear the distinct hallmarks of each artist – Ossa’s warbling melodicism, zakè’s tape treatments and classically-informed arrangements, and ASC’s phosphorescent radiance – yet the result is uniquely more than the sum of those parts.
