'time knows nothing of its flow
edges fade away
and so do all the wandering thoughts
at the close of day'

"hypnotism I" has held a special place on my hard drive since shortly after the release of mountain ambient IV. Like the piece itself, it evolved slowly and delicately. Each layer pulled me deeper into this hypnotic state of composition, listening, and re-composition that lasted for several months. Sometimes it would sit for weeks, patiently, before I added another small piece. The end result was so powerful, especially after such a long time, that I started putting everything new next to it in a folder simply called "hypnotism".

I have been building the foundations of mountain ambient V, yet this piece demanded companions. Nothing really felt right until I wrote "hypnotism II", which came after I stepped back into that initial hypnotic cycle. Once I stopped composing with direct intention, the rest of the album almost jumped out at me in comparison. After so long working on one piece I think the others had been steadily building up in my subconscious, eager to escape, but could only do so from a soft, organic focus with less forced intentionality.

The resulting sound is glacial and deep - the humming dreams hidden in the furthest roots of my other work. I'm happy to release this project as an interim release as I continue working on mountain ambient V. It has a beautiful soul that will continue to echo through my future work. A very special thank you to Zach of PITP for giving it a home next to all the other beautiful projects on HSP.

.foundation (pronounced just "foundation") is an ambient, drone, and soundscape project by Jake Carter. The project has strong roots in drone. Each piece usually begins with a "foundation" and is built up using granular synthesis and resampling techniques. Harmony and melody are woven in organically to bind themes around heavy experimentation and audio-generative approaches. Field-recordings play a strong role and are all hand-collected.

"I believe that technology is an extension of nature, and my work is a distillation of the experiences that have founded that idea. In my music are the audio logs, quietly captured and refined - artifacts of return journeys. If the mountains could sing, I imagine it to be with the voices that I give them here. There would be nothing without you to listen and give the sound life. I truly cannot thank you enough for your support." - JC
